| The Transformation of Golf Balls
When first invented golf balls were made of wood. The ‘featherie’ balls were invented in the seventeenth century. They were literally stuffed with goose feathers and the outside of the ball was made of cowhide and hence the name. The balls were boiled in water to shrink the cowhide around the feathers. As it took a long time to make just one, very few could be produced in the span of a day. They were also expensive, and most could not afford them.
The ‘guttie’ ball was invented in 1848. The sap from the Sapodilla tree was heated and formed into spherical shapes. Although the balls worked well when perfectly rounded, it was discovered that they worked much better if their shape was not perfect. Golf balls were made with multiple layers in the last century, consisting of a liquid center, a rubber thread wound tight over it and having a cover put on it to make our modern ball. Today, golf balls are made as two to four layered balls, and materials like urethane are used to form the layers.
They have to weigh less than 1.62 ounces and have a diameter of 1.68 inches in order to pass regulations. They need to be completely spherical in shape as required. Other sizes do exist, but they are not used in regulation play.
In the stores these days, we find the recreational and advanced golf balls. Cheaper to manufacture are the recreational ones with two layers. On the advanced balls provide more spin power and made with three or more layers. So as we’ve seen golf balls have undergone an interesting transformation over the centuries.
